Once considered the standard laundry appliances, the Maytag Washing Machine Company was founded in 1893 in Newton, Iowa. Their first automatic washers were produced in 1949. An interesting fact about the corporation is that it was one of few companies to actually turn a profit during the economic depression of the 1930s.
In the 1940s Maytag began to build other household appliances and subsequently acquired Hardwick Stove Company, Magic Chef, Hoover and Amana. In 2006 Maytag itself was acquired by Whirlpool. Considered a decent, mid-range quality option in appliances today, washers, dryers, fridges, ranges, cook tops, wall ovens, and dishwashers are all manufactured bearing the Maytag name. As with any appliance, it is best to do your due diligence, research and compare products before making a purchase.
